Continental Delayed!

D-4 Continental took its 15-0 record on the road Saturday night to Columbus Grove, and for much of the game it appeared the Pirates were going to remain unblemished however the Bulldogs had ideas.

Columbus Grove rallied to force OT and eventually come away with a 43-40 triump. Grove improved to (12-3) with the win.

Lakewood St.Edward's vs. Mentor

Leading by just two points (54-52) heading into the fourth quarter, the Lakewood St.Edward's Eagles exploded in the 4th stanza for a 78-63 triumph over visiting Mentor.

The scored was knotted at 18 after one period and Mentor took a 38-37 lead into the lockeroom, but Ed's was able to take control at the end of three quarters and never looked back.

With the win, Ed's improved to (13-3) on the year and Mentor dropped to (13-2).

Junior Delbert Love led Ed's with 19 points and big man Matt Stainbrook was next with 16 counters. Sophomore Myles Hamilton added 13 counters and junior Kyle Pisco chipped in with 10. 5-foot-7 senior Ryan Angers did a great job of leading the team and finished with six points.

6-foot-6 junior Jake Lorbach scored seven points all in the 1st half and Louisville commit Zach Price tossed in six.

Junior Cole Krizancic scored 22 points to lead Mentor along with Cameron Aloisio adding a career-high 22 as well. Senior Jaron Crowe returned from a knee injury after missing last night's game to Shaker Heights and contributed with 12.

Notes:

We said this would be a statement weekend in Northeast Ohio and it was. Ed's won a big pair over Garfield Heights and the Cardinals, while Mentor dropped two.

Just in Time!

Cincinnati Moeller's Griffin McKenzie scored on a putback at the buzzer to the Crusaders a 43-42 win over rival St.Xavier.

Northeast Ohio: Top Performances

Brunswick senior Tyler Ferrell scored 23 points in his team's 70-36 rout of Valley Forge in doing so the Wheeling Jesuit signee eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career.

Canton Timken's Jehvon Clarke scored 30 points as the Trojans held on for a PAC-7 victory, 73-62 in overtime besting Akron Manchester. Junior Rakim Reed added 21 points and nine rebounds for the Trojans (15-3).

Shaker Heights (6-7) got 20 points and seven caroms from junior Otis Barrow along with sophomore point guard Terry Rozier adding 18 points and six assists, and junior guard Nick Townes tossing in 16 points in the upset win over previously unbeaten Mentor (76-69).

6-foot-9 senior Bryan Theriot scored 21 points, grabbed 20 rebounds, and swatted away four shots in Midpark's (12-1) 60-49 win over Avon Lake.

Akron Buchtel (14-0) erupted for 111 points in its 111-53 thumping of Akron North. The Griffins placed four players in double figures including freshman Elijah Bell with 13 counters.

It was a big night for Massillon Jackson (13-2) as they defeated Austintown-Fitch to win the regular season Federal League crown. In addition, head coach Mike Fuline won his 100th game as Jackson's head boss and Wheeling Jesuit signee Brad Dupont dished out a school record-tying 13 assists including 10 points and seven rebounds. Kent State signee Mark Henniger led the way with 22 points and Akron signee Josh Egner chipped in with 13.

Ryan Burfield drained 8-of-14 three-point shots and tallied 34 points for the game to help East Canton remain unbeaten (15-0) and stake a claim for at least a share of the Portage Trail Conference title. The Hornets routed Mogadore 84-46 who had previously 5-of-7.

North Canton Hoover (12-2) senior Cory Veldhuizen scored 25 points and added 12 rebounds in the Vikings' 71-60 win over Canton Glen Oak on Friday in front of 2,000 fans. He shot 10-of-16 from the floor and snared seven offensive rebounds. His father (Evan) is a math teacher at Glen Oak. Storm Sanders led the Eagles with 26 points.

Surviving!

Unbeaten Findlay Liberty-Benton (15-0) escaped McComb with a dramatic 43-39 victory on the road Friday night, but that after a series of momentum swings. L-B is ranked No. 2 in D-3 by OHSH.

Trailing by 13 points in the 3rd quarter and then 30-18, the Eagles would go on a 16-0 run to take a 32-30 lead at the end of the 3rd and then extend the advantage to 34-30 in the 4th.

The run was fueled by senior Brett Pasche who knocked down three triples created by Ohio State signee Aaron Craft off the dribble-drive. Craft scored eight consecutive points during the run as well.

However, McComb (13-2) would battle back and take a 38-36 on a Mason Roth three-point goal, but Craft quickly answered with a bucket to knot the game at 38.

Then, L-B opted to hold the ball for nearly three minutes until Craft knocked down a bonus ball with eight seconds remaining to give the Eagles a 41-38 lead. McComb was not able to get off a game-knotting three as L-B fouled sending them to the line for a one-and-one.

Roth sank the 1st and missed the 2nd on purpose, but L-B got the rebound and Craft sealed the win with two freebies. The senior finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the Eagles.

Pasche added nine points and Jordan Benson tossed in a like amount.

Roth led McComb with 15 counters.

Time to Step Up

D-3 Cleveland VASJ took a big hit this week with its leading scorer electing to dismiss himself from the team, which meant somebody must step up for the Vikings. Friday night, one player did just that.

Flying Under the Radar

D-1 Twinsburg was just 4-2 at one point this season, but after Thursday night's 64-60 victory over Strongsville it has now won nine-straight (13-2).

Miami (OH) signee Jon Harris dropped a game-high 34 points for Twinsburg.

Strongsville, who is much better than its (8-7) record, tried to rally from a 12-point half time deficit behind outstanding junior Aaron White who scored 11 points in the 4th quarter and 22 for the game.

Showdown Spoiler!

Unbeaten Mentor traveled to Shaker Heights Friday in hopes of tune-up for Saturday night's marquee match up with Lakewood St.Edward's. However, Heights had different ideas.

The Cardinals were playing without 2nd leading scorer and floor general senior Jaron Crowe but leading scorer junior Cole Crizancic exploded for 41 points in his absence. Though, it still wasn't enough as Shaker Heights made some key free-throws down the stretch to hold on for a 76-69 victory.

Crowe missed the contest with a knee injury suffered on Tuesday in a win over Eastlake North.

Lakewood St.Edward's held up its end of the bargain with a 78-64 triumph of Garfield Heights.

Ed's got 18 points from junior Delbert Love, 16 by Louisville commit junior James Zach Price, 15 from sophomore guard Myles Hamilton, and 12 by senior Matt Stainbrook.

Junior guard Trey Lewis led Garfield with 23 points followed by freshman Tony Farmer's 15 and sophomore Mike Davis adding 14.

Georgetown senior Jess Chadwell became the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,433points by scoring 22 points against Clermont Northeastern last Friday. Chadwell has been a four-year varsity starter which included starting on the 2007 D-4 state championship squad. The senior averaged 17.6 ppg as a sophomore, 25.1 as a junior and is averaging 20.1 as a senior.

In breaking the record, he passed 2007 graduate Isaiah Felder, who now stands 2nd with 1,426 career-points.

Missed Score

Somehow we overlooked the results of the biggest game in Southwest Ohio this past Tuesday.

At any rate, Cincinnati LaSalle triumphed over Cincinnati Winton Woods 56-55 in a D-1 heavyweight showdown.

LaSalle, a team that starts four juniors and a sophomore, was led by junior Brandon 'Flight' Neel who scored 20 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Sophomore point guard Josh Lemons added 13 points and two assists and junior Ryan Fleming chipped in with seven points and four assists. Junior Matt Woeste also contributed seven markers.

Louisville football commit Dominique Brown scored 16 points and snared three boards to lead Winton Woods in defeat. Auburn basketball signee Allen Payne was good for 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and three steals.

Junior Semaj Christon netted 10 points, six assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Christon leads the Fort Ancient Valley Conference in assists and steals. Athletic senior Nate Mason was good for eight points and three rebounds.

LaSalle, with the win, moved to (13-2) and has won three-straight since losing to St.Xavier. Winton Woods dropped to (12-2) losing two of its last three contests.

Statement Weekend in NE Ohio

The Northeast Ohio big boys will be looking to make a statement this weekend with several key games on the slate.

Unbeaten Mentor will play at Shaker Heights on Friday before heading to Lakewood on Saturday to face off with St. Edward's (11-3). The Cardinals would certainly make a statement with a road win over Ed's. Mentor already owns high-profile wins over Massillon Jackson and Warren Harding.

St.Ed's will be at home on Friday with a talented Garfield Heights outfit before its showdown on Saturday with Mentor. Ed's could solidify itself as the best team in NE Ohio with a sweep of this weekend's games giving proof to OHSH's theory of the Eagles being the most talented team in the NE.

Warren Harding, after suffering a rare home defeat at the hands of upstart Canton McKinley, will try to knock off undefeated Mansfield Sr. on the road this Saturday.

Canton Glen Oak, after handing D-2 No. 1 Dayton Dunbar its first loss last weekend, will try to keep momentum going as they take the road against a very good North Canton Hoover team.

We should know a lot more after this weekend giving our Top 5 in D-1 a chance to be its most accurate.

Northwest District Report: Part 1

Northwest Report:

Division I:

There is quite a mix of teams in NW Ohio in the big school division that are right in the thick of things. Teams from the Greater Buckeye Conference, Northern Lakes League, Ohio Cardinal Conference, and the Toledo City League are vying for seeding in their respective sectional/districts.

The Willard Sectional will have two teams advance and right now the top two participants would be Marion Harding (14-1) and Mansfield Sr. (13-0). The former and latter are clear-cut favorites at this point with Ashland, Freemont Ross, and Sandusky being the other participating teams.

At Liberty-Benton, there is much more parody with the likes of Perrysburg (14-1), Bowling Green (10-4), Findlay (8-7), Springfield (9-4), Lima Senior (8-7), and Anthony Wayne. Perrysburg has been solid all year led by 6-foot-4 senior Charlie Hughes and is 10-0 in conference play and has now won eight-straight since losing to Toledo Whitmer (60-57). Bowling Green has plenty of talent led by 6-foot-5 junior Chauncey Orr and Findlay, Springfield, and Senior have been up-and-down most of the year.

The other two sites will be Toledo Waite and Toledo Central Catholic. The 11 teams will draw into one or the other with two squads advancing from each site into district play.

This district will be very interesting to say the least. Toledo City League teams, Toledo St. John’s (12-2), Toledo CC (11-2), Toledo DeSales (10-4), Toledo Rogers (10-4), Toledo Whitmer (10-3), and Toledo Waite (7-7) along with Northern Lakes League’s Sylvania Southview (8-7) are all in the hunt. Also, don’t forget about Toledo Start (6-7) who just upset Toledo CC. Start is led by one of the best scorers the state has to offer in 6-foot-1 senior Anthony Henderson.

St. John’s holds a win over Toledo CC and its two losses are to Southview (62-56) and Romulus (MI) by just two points.

Dynamic backcourts:
Marion Harding is led by the backcourt of Shawn Dyer and Marvin Owens, who can both light up the scoreboard. Another tremendous duo is Chester McFadden and sophomore Leroy Alexander at Holland Springfield. Alexander scored 35 points in his last outing which was a win over Maumee.

Freshman Flavor:
Toledo St. John’s Marc Loving and Toledo Whitmer’s Nigel Hayes have burst onto scene ranked by many as two of the top 2013s in the whole state.

Division II:

Three districts will make up the D-2 Northwest District (Bowling Green, Ashland, and Ohio Northern), and the one survivor from each site will meet at Bowling Green University for regional play.

The fourth district winner will be from the Westlake District out of the Northeast, and that winner will be paired with the Ohio Northern winner in regional semi-final play.

The BG District is comprised of two sectionals (Clay HS and Swanton HS) with two winners from each sectional advancing to district play.

Two teams from the Clay HS Sectional will advance and right now it appears the three front-runners are Toledo Libbey (8-4), Rossford (10-5), and Eastwood (10-4). Libbey, who is led by mainly juniors, has played the best competition. Rossford, who play in mainly a D-1 conference, has won four-straight but not many notable wins. Eastwood has a nice record winning seven-straight, but plays in mainly a D-3 league.

The Swanton Sectional will advance two squads as well with Defiance (13-2) as the paper favorite along with Napoleon (7-7), Wauseon (9-4), and Bryan (6-6). Defiance has been solid all year with its only two setbacks coming to D-1 Lima Sr. and D-3 Archbold. The recent return of outstanding sophomore guard Anthony Kidston will really give them a nice scoring lift to the backcourt with an already formidable frontline.

Napoleon is .500, but plays very good competition in a mainly D-1 Greater Buckeye Conference. Freshman guard Jordan Lauf has been outstanding thus far. Napoleon holds a win over Wauseon and Defiance has beat Bryan. Defiance and Napoleon would be our favorites out of this sectional.

The Bowling Green District tournament could look something like this: Libbey, Rossford, Defiance, and Napoleon.

At Sandusky, unbeaten Port Clinton (13-0) is the odd-on favorite, but five other teams are over .500 including Bellevue (10-4), Clyde (9-5), Norwalk (9-5), Milan Edison (8-7), and Sandusky Perkins (7-6).

Port Clinton is unbeaten, but it is hard to gauge just how good they are with its one significant win being a two-point victory over Bellevue. The Northern Ohio League (Bellevue and Norwalk) and Sandusky Bay Conference (PC, Clyde, Edison, and Perkins) are not real strong this year, so this sectional is really hard to grasp.

Port Clinton is a senior laden bunch led by guard Cory Brown and the inside combination of Ryan Hicks (6’6) and Josh Francis (6’4). Seniors Derek Colston (6’3) and Allen Tigner (6’2) can also score the basketball, and fellow classmates Josh Graves, Robert Fravel, and Eric Reynolds provide scoring punch off the bench.

The Mansfield Senior Sectional favorite, at this point, is Lexington (13-3). Lexington’s Ohio Cardinal Conference foe Mansfield Madison (8-6) is another candidate along with Northern Ohio League squad Shelby (8-7). Madison lost to Shelby (77-65) in the season’s opener, while Madison and Lexington have split with the Minutemen owning the most recent game winning at Madison.

Lexington is led by Michigan football signee Courtney Avery, who was also a member of All-Ohio Red’s 17U AAU National Championship team.

The Ashland District could look something like this: Port Clinton, Bellevue, Lexington, and Mansfield Madison.

The Lima Senior Sectional could easily be renamed the Western Buckeye League Invitational. Celina (10-4), Van Wert (10-3), and Elida (8-5) will be the three favorites all out of the same conference. Celina has several quality wins including a win over Van Wert, while Elida owns victories over Lima CC, Lima Bath, and Van Wert. Elida’s losses were to Lima Sr., Coldwater, Liberty-Benton, Toledo DeSales, and Toledo CC. Van Wert coasted through a relatively easy early schedule, but has since lost to Celina, Elida, and Defiance as the schedule has got more challenging.

Elida is led by the sensational sophomore Reggie McAdams (6’4) and older brother Alex. Celina is fueled by Darin Waterman, Nate Bihn, and John Homan.

At Riverdale HS, Lima Bath (10-4) and Tiffin Colubian (8-6) are most likely the two favorites.

The Ohio Northern District could look something like this: Celina, Elida, Bath, and Columbian.

District Reports...Coming Soon

OHSH will be releasing its district reports this week. We are currently working on the Northwest District. Look for more information to be posted coming soon. We have been limited lately production wise, but look for OHSH to be peaking by tournament time.

Sullinger Breaks Record

Jared Sullinger scored 44 points in Northland's (15-0) 97-46 victory over Columbus Whetstone. Sullinger's point-total is the highest all-time for a single-game in school history. The Ohio State signee also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Junior Trey Burke chipped in with 18 points and eight assists and J.D. Weatherspoon added 14 points and three caroms.

Toledo Freshmen...Sizzling

Last weekend, 6-foot-7 Toledo Whitmer freshman Nigel Hayes scored 21 points including the game winning free-throws in a 62-61 win over Toledo Libbey.

His AAU teammate on All-Ohio Red (Marc Loving) scored 25 points and snared seven rebounds in a win over Toledo Rogers.

Hayes and Loving are two of the state's best in the Class of 2013. Both are in OHSH's Top 5 for that class.

Freshman Jordan Lauf is also performing well at D-2 Napoleon (7-7). Lauf scored 19 points in his last outing a 49-44 win over Sandusky.

Hughes Tops 1,000-point Mark

Perryburg's senior Charlie Hughes scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 62-57 win over East Cleveland Shaw to give the 6-foot-4 post 1,016-career points. The Yellow Jackets are currently 14-1 having won eight-straight.
